The peak travel season is in full swing, and with it comes full airports, overbooked flights and, unfortunately, some unavoidable delays. While there's no magic formula to ensure a smooth flight, there are smart strategies that can help you reduce risk and keep your experience as seamless as possible.
Choose early flights: less traffic, fewer surprises
When it comes to flying, getting up early has its advantages. Flights that take off earlier in the day tend to leave on time more often. The reason? Airport operations have not yet accumulated delays and weather conditions are usually more stable. Plus, if something goes wrong, you'll have more room to reschedule during the day.
If you can, choose direct flights or long connections
Every extra layover is an opportunity for something to go wrong: tight connections, distant gates or terminal changes. Ideally, take a direct flight, but if that's not possible, make sure the time between connections is sufficient - two hours is a good starting point. And if you fly with multiple stopovers, doing so with the same airline can make logistics much easier in case of changes.
Fly on weekdays to avoid the crowds
Weekdays, especially Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays, tend to be quieter compared to weekends or Monday mornings. This can not only translate into a less chaotic airport, but also a more streamlined experience with lines, boarding and security.
Be prepared with up-to-date information
Before your flight, check the weather conditions in both your departure and destination cities. It is also advisable to download your airline's app to receive real-time alerts and be able to manage changes quickly if something is not going as expected. Some airports or airlines even allow you to make changes without penalty in case of announced adverse weather.
Find out about the busiest airports
Some airports tend to accumulate more delays during the summer due to high demand or operational constraints. Although it is not always possible to avoid these setbacks, knowing this information can help you prepare better: arrive early, have your documents handy and keep an eye out for announcements on terminals or digital screens.
